The Cavaliers scored three first half goals and held off a late rally by West Virginia to move on to the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament.
Virginia got out to the early lead when Lauren Alwine sent a corner kick into the box and Alli Fries headed the ball into the goal. The Cavaliers would add two more goals before the end of the half as well. Maggie Kistner beat WVU's keeper to give Virginia a two goal lead, and 46 seconds later Alwine lofted the ball over the keeper's head for her sixth goal of the season.
The Mountaineers would make it interesting though. Deanna Everett scored two goals in the second half to cut UVa's lead to 1. But the Cavaliers were able to hold off WVU in the end, advancing to the third round of the NCAA tournament for the fourth straight year.
The Cavaliers will take on ACC rival Duke in the round of 16 Saturday at Klockner Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 pm.
