Sylven Landesberg scored 21 points to lead the Cavalier men's basketball team past South Florida, 77-75, on Wednesday night. Landesberg has now led Virginia in scoring in both regular season games, as the Cavaliers improve to 2-0.
The game was back and forth the entire way, with the teams tied at 34 heading into halftime. The second half saw more of the same, as Virginia took the 73-71 lead with 1:50 to play. After the Bulls fought back to take the 75-74 lead, Landesberg scored on a layup with 13 seconds remaining to give Virginia the 76-75 lead. The freshman was fouled with eight seconds left after South Florida missed a jumper, and hit one of two free throws. A last second attempt to tie the game by South Florida failed, as Virginia earned the win.
The victory snaps the Cavaliers' five game losing streak against Big East opponents, and marks their 19th straight win against first time foes. It is also Virginia's 35th consecutive home win in the month of November, as the Wahoos start out the season 2-0 for the tenth straight season.
South Florida's Dominique Jones led all scorers with 23 points in the Bulls' losing effort, while Jesus Verdejo added 22. Jamil Tucker scored a career high 15 points for the Cavaliers.
