Virginia lacrosse hasn't had much success against Duke in recent years. Even this season the Cavs fell to the Blue Devils for the sixth straight time in Durham. Friday night in Chapel Hill, Virginia could have put all of that to rest in the opening round of the ACC Tournament.
The Cavs came out firing. An early goal just 11 seconds into the contest by Danny Glading hoped to pace the Cavaliers in what was thought to be their next step toward another ACC Championship. However, after the first quarter Duke took control.
The Blue Devils scored seven goals in the first half and held Virginia to two goals till the fourth quarter. By that time the game was well in hand. Duke defeated the Cavaliers 16-5 their seventh win in as many tries.
With the loss, Virginia now awaits an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. The seeding will be announced Sunday, May 3rd on ESPN.
