Cavalier Tennis: Men Earn Top Seed, Women Earn Bid

April 28, 2009

The Virginia men's and women's tennis teams both got good news during the NCAA Tournament selection show on Tuesday. Both teams will get the chance to play in the field of 64 and go for a national title.

For the second consecutive year, Brian Boland's Virginia men are the number one overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Cavaliers are 29-0 on the year, ACC champions, and are the only remaining unbeaten team in Division I. They'll take on Navy in first round action at Snyder Tennis Center on Friday, May 8, at 1:00pm. North Carolina and South Carolina will face each other that same day at 10:00am, with the winners facing off on Saturday at 1:00 in second round action.

After a year without an NCAA bid, the Cavalier women are back in the big dance. Virginia earns an at large bid and will head to Durham for first and second round action. The Cavaliers are 13-9 on the year and currently ranked 27th in the nation. They'll begin with Virginia Commonwealth and, with a win, will face the winner of Duke and Richmond in second round action. The Blue Devils are the number three overall seed and won the ACC. Dates and times will be announced at a later date, but will be between May 8-10.
