Bates, 'Hoos Hand High Point First Loss

A handball in the box with less than two minutes to play in regulation proved to be the downfall of High Point's unbeaten season.

Defender Shane Malcolm was called for the handball with 1:13 to play in Tuesday's match at Virginia. Will Bates scored his second goal of the game on the resulting penalty kick, giving the Cavaliers a 2-1 win.

With the loss, the Panthers -- who entered Tuesday's game ranked 23rd in the country, the program's first-ever national ranking -- fell to 10-1-1 on the season. Virginia improved to 6-5-1 with its first win over a ranked opponent this fall.

"It's a big win for us," said Virginia coach George Gelnovatech. "This is an ACC-quality opponent tonight. When you can go undefeated to this part of the season, they're doing something right and they're a good team. And this was a good performance by us. A good win; a win that we needed."

Virginia had dropped three of its last four prior to Tuesday's win. Tuesday's game was the first of four in a row at Klockner Stadium for the Cavaliers.

"It's huge. I mean, especially after the past results we've gotten in recent games. "Getting a win against a ranked opponent," said Bates, who scored from 19 yards out on a free kick in the game's 29th minute to erase an early 1-0 High Point lead. "It's our first good win really. And it's great going into Wake Forest, and we've got a little home stretch here. So it's great to get a win."

His two goals on Tuesday give Bates seven for the season.
