Last May, the Virginia men's tennis team beat UCLA to clinch the first NCAA title in program history.
The Bruins beat the Cavaliers in Thursday's rematch in Los Angeles, giving 9-2 UVa its first season with multiple regular season losses since 2007.
The Bruins entered Thursday's match ranked third in the country, while the Cavaliers were ranked second. The final was 4-3 UCLA, with the Bruins winning the doubles point, and getting singles wins from Clay Thompson (7-6(1), 3-6, 7-5 over Mitchell Frank); Marcos Giron (5-7, 7-6(7), 7-6(4) over Alex Domijan); and Mackenzie McDonald (7-5, 6-4 over Ryan Shane).
UVa's singles wins came from Mac Styslinger (6-4, 4-6, 7-6(5) over Gage Brymer); Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (6-7(5), 6-4, 6-2 over Karue Sell); and Justin Shane (1-6, 7-6(3), 7-6(4) over Joseph Di Giulio).
