The UVa field hockey team opened up the Sheraton Catamount Classic with a 2-0 victory over Maine.
A deflection off a Maine stick on a shot from Jess Orrett in the first two minutes of the game was the only score in the game until freshman Lucy Hyams knocked in a shot with 38 seconds remaining.
"There were definitely challenges in the game, but the team was able to meet those challenges," said head coach Michele Madison. "I thought the team adjusted to the way Maine played. We were able to shut down the interior big ball and create some attack off that."
Virginia held a 17-10 advantage in shots, including holding a 13-5 edge in the second half.
Junior goalkeeper Jenny Johnstone logged four saves to improve her record to 6-0.
With the victory, Virginia improved to 6-0 on the season. Maine fell to 2-4.
The Cavaliers finish off the tournament on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 12 p.m., taking on host Vermont.
