The Virginia softball team’s rally at Maryland fell short Sunday afternoon, as the 'Hoos fell 6-5. With the loss, the Cavaliers fell to 12-15 overall and 1-5 in the ACC.
Four Cavaliers had multiple hits, including senior Taylor Williams with three and juniors Marcy Bowdren and Karli Johnson and sophomore Megan Harris with two.
After falling behind 6-1 after four innings, the Cavaliers scored four runs in the fifth. After Bowdren singled and Harris walked, Johnson hit her fourth home run of the season to left-center field. Williams singled to score Lauren Didlake later in the inning to cut the lead to 6-5.
The Cavaliers were able to load the bases in the sixth and move a runner to third in the seventh, but were unable to score against Kaitlyn Schmeiser, who earned the save for Maryland.
Senior pitcher Melanie Mitchell threw a complete game with sixth strikeouts and six runs in six innings, but took the loss to fall to 9-9 on the season.
Up next, the Cavaliers host Boston College in an ACC series March 29-30 at The Park. Friday’s doubleheader is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start, while Saturday’s single game is set for noon.
