Cavalier Tennis Teams Head to Sweet 16

As their NCAA Tournament runs continue, both the UVa men's and women's tennis teams hit the road for Athens, Ga. on Monday.

"I think this is important for us to try to get acclimated to the heat and the conditions," men's head coach Brian Boland said of the trip. "I think it will make a big difference for us going into this weekend. If we can get by the match on Friday, we could potentially play back-to-back-to-back, which is different than it was last year. We have to be ready to deal with the heat and all the conditions."

The men begin play in Athens with a matchup against Notre Dame in the Round of 16 on Friday. This is the 11th straight year that the Cavaliers have advanced to the Sweet 16.

"Guys are definitely excited to get down there to Athens," said junior Mitchell Frank. "A lot of guys, I know they wanted to get into Athens already, but obviously we had to get through two teams that fought us really hard these last two days."

The women's tennis team is also headed to the Round of 16 in Athens, where they'll begin play on Thursday against Baylor. The Cavaliers are the No. 3 seed in the tournament, the highest in their program history. After winning an ACC Tournament title this season, they've been riding the momentum in the early rounds of the NCAA Tournament.

"After these last two wins, Kentucky was such a tough match," said sophomore Julia Elbaba. "We're really motivated and hungry to do well in Athens and play another tough team, Baylor. We played them last year. It was a tough one, so we're looking to get revenge."

"I think that our focus was good this weekend, but I think it's going to be even better as we head into Athens," added head coach Mark Guilbeau. "I know that we're truly really going to take this thing one match at a time and focus in. But they deserve it. It's a hard working team and they deserve to have the confidence that they have right now."
