The Virginia baseball team dropped their season opener to Boston College 5-3 Friday afternoon in the Caravelle Resort Tournament in South Carolina. The Eagles rallied from a three-run deficit, scoring four runs in the fourth inning to secure the lead.
UVa junior Brande Kline (0-1) took the loss after pitching into in the fifth inning. The converted closer allowed five runs (one earned), seven hits, and two walks in 4.0 innings. Kline struck out three batters. Kyle Crockett finished the final five innings, allowing two hits and two walks, and striking out three.
Virginia led 3-0 after scoring two runs in the second inning and added a third in their next at-bat. Jared King and Reed Gragnani each had a pair of hits in the loss.
After a pair of Cavalier errors, Boston College got on the board in the fourth inning to trail 3-1. Spenser Payne tacked on with a three-run homer to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead they would never lose.
UVa next meets tournament host Coastal Carolina on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Cavaliers first home game is scheduled for Tuesday February 21 against William and Mary at 3 p.m.
