The No. 12 Virginia women's tennis team opened a two-match weekend road-trip with a 5-2 win over NC State on Saturday. The Cavaliers (13-4, 4-2 ACC) snapped a two-match losing streak with the win.
Virginia opened the match by sweeping all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Hana Tomljanovic and Erin Vierra topped Elisha Hande and Chloe Smith 8-3 at the No. 2 position. Emily Fraser and Lindsey Hardenbergh followed with an 8-2 win at No. 1 over Ashley Miller and Joelle Kissell. Caryssa Peretz and Maria Fuccillo completed the sweep with an 8-6 win at No. 3 over Christy Sipes and Nicole Martinez.
In singles, the top four positions started play first as the match was played on NC State’s four indoor courts. In three of those matches, the Cavaliers won convincingly to clinch the victory. Vierra rolled to a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4 over Hande. Hardenbergh followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 over Smith. At No. 3, Tomljanovic sealed the win with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Miller.
The Wolfpack got a point at No. 1 where Kissell edged Fraser in a third-set match-tiebreaker. The teams split the final two matches, with Peretz topping Martinez 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5, and Sipes downing Fuccillo 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6.
