For the first time in a dozen years, the Virginia men's basketball team will begin its season ranked in the Associated Press Top 25.
The Cavaliers came in at No. 24 in the preseason AP poll released Thursday afternoon. UVa tips off its season next Friday against James Madison, at John Paul Jones Arena.
Earlier this month, Virginia was ranked 25th in the preseason coaches poll. This marks the first time since 2001 -- when they began the season No. 11 in both polls -- that the Cavaliers were ranked in either preseason Top 25.
UVa last appeared in the AP poll on February 27, 2012, when they were also No. 24 in the country.
The Cavaliers are one of five ACC teams in the AP's preseason poll. Preseason league favorite Duke (4) and newcomer Syracuse (8) are both in the Top 10, followed by North Carolina (12) and Notre Dame (21).
