Cavaliers Top Irish, Advance to NCAA Quarterfinals

For the tenth year in a row, the Virginia men's tennis team is moving on to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament. The Cavaliers topped Notre Dame 4-1 on Friday in Athens, Ga., earning their fourth win over the Irish this season.

UVa opened by winning a close doubles point. At number one, UVa's Alex Domijan and Harrison Richmond fell to Notre Dame's Greg Andrews and Alex Lawson, 8-6. Justin Shane and Mitchell Frank won at number three doubles to even it at 1-1, beating Notre Dame's Matt Dooley and Quentin Monaghan, 8-6. Thai-Son Kwiatkowski and Mac Styslinger clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 win at number two over Josh Hagar and Billy Pecor.

The Cavaliers got singles wins from Justin Shane, Thai-Son Kwiatkowski, and Mitchell Frank to seal the victory and advance. Shane made it 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles over Eric Schnurrenberger. Kwiatkowski increased the lead to 3-0, defeating Eddy Covalschi at No. 5. Kwiatkowski also won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. After Styslinger fell at No. 4 to Josh Hagar, Frank closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ryan Bandy, to make it 4-1.

UVa advances to play Baylor in Athens in the Round of 8 on Saturday at 12 p.m. The 'Hoos beat Baylor 6-1 on Mar. 1 at Boar's Head Sports Club.
