Joe Harris scored 22 points and Akil Mitchell added 14 points and 12 rebounds as Virginia stepped up its defense at key points in the second half of a 58-55 win over N.C. State Tuesday night at John Paul Jones Arena.
The Cavaliers are now 5-0 all-time at John Paul Jones Arena against State.
The Wolfpack led 31-24 at halftime but the Cavaliers turned up the defensive pressure in the second half. Freshman Mike Tobey was a key contributor in the half, finishing with 13 points and seven rebounds on the game.
The two teams traded baskets for much of the second half until a Harris layup gave the Hoos a 54-51 lead with just under five minutes remaining.
State's Scott Wood countered with a three to tie the game but Mitchell drained a jumper from the top of the key to give the Cavs a two-point lead.
The teams then spent the next three minutes exchanging missed shots before Jontel Evans, who had missed all three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt right before half, sunk two big freebies to give the Hoos the final 58-55 edge.
Virginia (15-5, 5-2) visits Georgia Tech Sunday.
