Cavs' Bats Heat Up as UVa Forces Game Three

The Virginia baseball team saved its season on Sunday at Davenport Field with a 7-3 win over Maryland in the second game of a best-of-three NCAA Super Regional. The Cavaliers bounced back from a 5-4 loss on Saturday, finishing with 17 hits in the win and forcing a decisive game three.

Mike Papi, Daniel Pinero, and Kenny Towns all went 3-for-5 at the plate, adding one RBI each. Branden Cogswell, Brandon Downes, and Derek Fisher all finished with two hits and an RBI for the Cavaliers.

UVa starting pitcher Brandon Waddell earned the win, going 5.2 innings and giving up seven hits and one run. Artie Lewicki closed out the final 3.1 innings to earn the save, giving up two hits and two runs in the win.

"There's a lot of anxiety this time of the year, I think that's natural," head coach Brian O'Connor said after the game. "I personally was as calm today as I ever have been at this time of the year. That was because I know what these guys are made of, and I know the talent they have. You've got to come beat us, because I think what we're bringing to the table is pretty good."

With the game tied at 1-1 in the sixth, the Cavaliers took a lead they would never relinquish. Towns scored on an RBI groundout by John La Prise to give UVa a 2-1 advantage.

The Cavaliers broke open the game with three runs in the top of the seventh. Fisher hit a sacrifice fly off Maryland reliever Tayler Stiles and drove in Pinero, then Papi scored on an RBI single up the middle by Towns. With two outs, Downes' RBI single scored McCarthy to extend the lead to 5-1.

UVa made the score 6-1 with a run in the eighth inning. Pinero drew a one-out walk and after Papi singled, he scored on an RBI single by McCarthy.

The Cavaliers tacked on one more run in the ninth to increase the lead to 7-1. Robbie Coman drew a two-out walk and scored on Cogswell's double.

Virginia and Maryland will play the decisive game three on Monday at Davenport Field, with the winner advancing to the College World Series in Omaha. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
