Cavs Confirm Transfer of Tennessee's Thompson

The Virginia basketball team confirmed the addition of rising sophomore guard Darius Thompson on Friday.

Thompson's family announced the guard's intention to transfer from Tennessee earlier this month. The Tennessee native averaged 2.6 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 2.4 assists as a freshman for the Volunteers this past season.

“We are excited to add Darius to the Virginia basketball family," UVa coach Tony Bennett said in a school-issued release Friday morning. "Darius is an athletic and versatile guard, who can defend and understands team basketball. We believe he will be a great fit in our system.”

Thompson started 10 games last season for the Volunteers, who finished the year 24-13 -- including a 35-point win over the Cavaliers in Knoxville -- and with an NCAA Tournament appearance. Thompson announced his intention to leave the program following coach Cuonzo Martin's departure to take over at California.

Thompson must sit out the 2014-15 season at UVa because of NCAA transfer rules. He will have three years of eligibility remaining following the season, putting him in the same class as the Cavaliers' incoming freshmen, and redshirt freshman Devon Hall.
