Cavs Extend Streak on Lennon's Golden Goal

Just three days after upsetting Notre Dame in South Bend, George Gelnovatch's Virginia men's soccer team was back on the field Tuesday night, hosting UNC-Greensboro.

"I've got to be honest, I was a little worried about it. I was worried about the hangover from a big win," Gelnovatch admitted afterward.

But the Cavaliers were able to extend their unbeaten streak to 11 straight games with a 2-1 overtime win over the Spartans. Freshman Riggs Lennon netted the game-winner with a header off a UVa corner kick midway through the first overtime period.

"We came off, we were feeling great. We beat the No. 2 team in the nation. We wanted to come in, and we wanted to end the season, keep on winning to go into the tournament," said Lennon. "So this was a big win for us, and we've just got to keep it rolling."

"We let them score on a restart and it made things a little trickier for us," Gelnovatch said. "But to our credit, we've been in a lot of these overtime games before. And right from the first whistle in the overtime, I felt like we were going to win it. Because I felt like we started passing and moving; we had fresh bodies in there.

"And sure enough we did."

Ryan Zinkhan scored the other goal for the Cavaliers, who are now unbeaten in their last nine games at Klöckner Stadium. Virginia also improved to 7-0-4 since losing at Wake Forest on September 13.

The Cavaliers outshot UNCG 18-9. UVa goalkeeper Jeff Gal made a pair of saves, while the Spartans' Stephen Moffitt saved four.
