Cavs "Fine-Tuning" During Final Week of Camp

Mike London knows his Virginia football team still has plenty of work to do before the season kicks off against BYU on August 31.

"There are 10 days before the first game," London said with a smile before Tuesday's practice at the McCue Center, "and we need all 10 of them."

Tuesday marked the team's final practice with any media availability prior to the 2013 season. The Cavaliers will switch to "game week" mode next week, when the countdown to the Cougars' visit will really begin.

"I think all the installation is in there. But now, going back and fine-tuning the things that we need to do," London said. "And then, specifically geared toward BYU, I think that's still yet to be done. But if you ask the coaches, I think they like where we are right now, as far as a team."

That BYU game will be UVa's first under London's new-look coaching staff, which includes coordinators Steve Fairchild (offense), Jon Tenuta (defense), and Larry Lewis (special teams), as well as associate head coach Tom O'Brien. The arrival of that new staff has been one of the most popular storylines of the Cavaliers' preseason.

But beyond that, it's been a relatively quiet summer for London's team.

London answered the biggest question of camp last week, when he announced sophomore David Watford would be the Cavaliers' starting quarterback. Very few other starting positions are still up for grabs.

At this point, London says the focus is on filling spots farther down the depth chart. On Tuesday, he mentioned the search for a fourth cornerback -- redshirt freshman Wil Wahee had been the front-runner before tearing an ACL -- and a fourth defensive tackle, as well as young players who can provide depth at spots like safety, fullback, and the offensive line.

And London acknowledged that having roles defined for most of camp has made life easier this month.

"It's good to know," he said. "And it's good for the players to know, all know that we have to compete consistently. But at the same time, it's good to know that when you go in, this is the first group and this is the second group. And now we're trying to find added depth to make us a better football team."
