The Virginia baseball team will take some hot bats to Chapel Hill for this week's season-ending series against North Carolina.
The Cavaliers got four hits and four RBI from freshman Joe McCarthy, three hits from Mike Papi, and a three-run homer from Nick Howard in a 17-3 win in Tuesday night's home finale against Virginia Commonwealth.
Virginia finishes the regular season 32-3 at Davenport Field. They take a 42-8 overall record into the North Carolina series.
The Cavaliers had 17 hits as a team on Tuesday. They've put up a total of 48 runs on 54 hits in their past three games, going back to Saturday.
McCarthy went 4-6, including an RBI double that got the Cavaliers on the board in the first inning. He added a two-run single as part of a four-run seventh, and another RBI single in the eighth.
Howard's three-run homer, his second of the season, also came in the first.
Virginia (20-7 in the ACC) enters Thursday's series opener a game behind North Carolina (20-5) in the Coastal Division standings. Because the ACC uses conference winning percentage as its first tie-breaker, the Cavaliers need to sweep UNC to clinch the top seed in next week's conference tournament.
