The Virginia coaching staff has now had a full week of practice to evaluate their quarterbacks. Through week one of camp, the five quarterbacks on the roster had been splitting reps in practice. Head Coach Mike London says beginning this week, the staff will start curtailing the number of reps based on who is performing well.
Alabama transfer Phillip Sims and last year's starter, Michael Rocco, are competing for the starting job with sophomore David Watford, who also saw a lot of playing time last year. So far, London says it's been a strong three-way competition. "I've always said the thing that Michael has right now, he knows the offense," said London. "To see how much Phillip can learn, how much he can absorb and execute out here on the field when you've got guys rushing at him, that's going to be the key. You can't forget about David. David's not sitting back resting on his laurels, he's also getting out there and competing, so it's been a really good competitive first week."
Offensive coordinator Bill Lazor says there is still no timeline set for when the coaches will name their starter. Lazor says, "the number one thing is there's never enough reps. I think we've got five guys, I'd love to get them all to play all the time, but that's not going to happen, there's only so many reps in practice.
"We do our best trying to challenge each of them everyday, but that might change a little bit as far as the numbers that one person gets," he added. "As a coach you've got to work really hard to make sure they're each having a chance to learn the things they have to do and executing on the field. Over time, it'll play out, they'll play it out on the field, and that's the best way to have it happen."
