Cavs Top Arkansas Again, Advance to Super Regional

For the fifth time in six years, the Virginia baseball team is headed to a Super Regional in the NCAA Tournament. The Cavaliers won the Charlottesville regional with a 9-2 victory against Arkansas on Sunday night at Davenport Field.

UVa starting pitcher Brandon Waddell allowed two runs in 6.2 innings, while Whit Mayberry closed out the game with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.

The Razorbacks beat Bucknell 10-0 earlier in the day to reach the final, but were eliminated after falling to the 'Hoos for the second time in two days.

The Cavaliers did most of their damage offensively in the third inning. With the bases loaded, Mike Papi drew a walk to move a run home. The next batter, Joe McCarthy singled to score Brandon Downes and Derek Fisher followed with a two-RBI single, scoring Mike Papi and Brandon Cogswell to make it 4-0. After batting around, John La Prise used a base hit to drive in two more runs, pushing the lead to 6-0.

Arkansas scored on a two-run home run by Krisjon Wilkerson off Brandon Waddell in the seventh, to make it 6-2.

UVa added three insurance runs in the ninth, beginning with a Fisher single that scored Papi and Daniel Pinero. La Prise later reached on an error by the shortstop, allowing McCarthy to score.

La Prise finished the night 3-for-5 with 2 RBI, while Fisher went 2-for-4 with 4 RBI.

UVa will host the upcoming Super Regional, and will face ACC foe Maryland, which upset South Carolina to win the Columbia regional. The Terrapins hadn't been to the tournament since 1971, but they scored wins over South Carolina on both Saturday and Sunday nights, snapping the Gamecocks 28-game home winning streak in NCAA Tournament play.
