Cavs Upset Hoyas to Reach NCAA Quarterfinals

Virginia has won multiple games in the NCAA women's lacrosse tournament for the first time in six years.

The 2013 team advanced to the second weekend of this year's tournament with a 10-8 upset of six-seed Georgetown in Sunday's second round. The Cavaliers now advance to face No. 3 North Carolina in next weekend's quarterfinals.

It's the program's best NCAA tournament performance since the 2007 team, which lost to Northwestern in the national championship game.

Virginia pulled away from the Hoyas with an 8-1 run that started in the first half and extended into the second, that gave the Cavaliers an 8-2 lead with about 22 minutes to play. The Cavaliers led 10-4 with about 15 minutes to play, then held off a late Georgetown rally to advance.

Senior Caroline McTiernan and sophomore Casey Bocklet had three points apiece to lead Virginia in scoring.

Virginia last reached the NCAA quarterfinals in 2010, but only needed to beat Towson that season to advance to the round of eight. This is the first season the NCAA expanded the tournament field to 26 teams.

The Cavaliers lost their regular season match-up with North Carolina, 8-7 in Chapel Hill.
