The Virginia baseball team had the bases loaded with no outs in the top of the seventh but the middle of the lineup all struck out to give North Carolina State a 5-1 win in the series opener Friday in Raleigh.
Reed Gragnani, Stephen Bruno and Mike Papi all reached base to start the seventh off State's Chris Overman but Overman proceeded to strike out Jared King, Derek Fisher and Nick Howard to end the game.
Chris Taylor had an RBI double and Keith Werman scored a run for Virginia. Gragnani had a pair of hits.
Scott Silverstein took the loss for the Cavs. He tossed six innings, gave up four earned runs and struck out two.
The loss dropped Virginia to 17-9-1 on the season and 5-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. These two will meet again Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
