Cold Stretch Dooms 'Hoos in UNC Loss

The Virginia women's basketball team hung with No. 11 North Carolina for the first half of Thursday's game at John Paul Jones Arena. UVa also outscored the Tar Heels by 10 over the game's final five minutes.

But a rough start to the second half doomed the Cavaliers, who had a four-game winning streak at home snapped with an 80-76 loss.

The Cavaliers only trailed by two points at halftime. But UVa missed nine of its first 10 field goal attempts to start the second half, allowing the Tar Heels to extend their lead to as many as 19 points.

"We dug ourselves too much of a hole there, coming out in the second half. And we just ran out of time, basically," UVa coach Joanne Boyle said after the game.

Faith Randolph came off the UVa bench to score 16 of her game-high 24 points over the final 11 minutes, leading the Cavaliers' attempt at a rally. A Randolph three-pointer with 16 seconds to play got UVa within four points, but that's where comeback came to an end.

Randolph was one of five Cavaliers to finish the night in double figures. Lexie Gerson finished with 12 points, while Sarah Imovbioh had another double-double (11 points and 12 rebounds) despite only playing 24 minutes because of foul trouble.

Ataira Franklin added 11 points, while Kelsey Wolfe finished with 10.

"It's all there," Boyle said. "We're playing with these teams that are top 10, top 15 teams. And we just, we've got to understand that it's a 40-minute game. We just had lapses too long. Against good teams, it's just too much to come back."

The Tar Heels also had five players finish with double figures, led by Allisha Gray (18 points) and Stephanie Mavunga (17 points and 10 rebounds).

UNC improved to 21-6 on the season (9-4 in the ACC) with the win. With the loss, UVa fell to 13-13 (6-7 ACC).
