Elbow Surgery Ends Mayberry's Season

Virginia coaches hoped junior right-hander Whit Mayberry would be a key contributor to the Cavaliers' rebuilt pitching staff this spring. Instead, Mayberry will be forced to watch the rest of the season from the dugout.

The school has announced that Mayberry's season is over, after he underwent Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ligament in his pitching elbow Tuesday morning. Mayberry went 2-0 with a 3.67 ERA and 24 strikeouts in five starts this season.

Mayberry began the season as the Cavaliers' No. 2 starter, and pitched six innings to earn the team's first win of the season when UVa beat Coastal Carolina 9-3 on February 18.

He gave up three runs and four hits in 3.1 innings and earned a no-decision in his last start of the season, a 7-5 UVa loss at Florida State on March 19.

Mayberry's spot in the weekend rotation has been filled by sophomore Artie Lewicki. The right-hander is 1-1 with a 4.31 ERA in eight appeances (including five starts) this season.
