There will undoubtedly be a lot of emotion in John Paul Jones Arena when Virginia hosts Maryland in its regular season finale on Sunday. Point guard Jontel Evans says it will be even more emotional for him, because it's Senior Day.
"These four years have flown by so fast," he said. "I'm just thankful to be a part of this Virginia history, you know, and play in front of all these great fans that we have. I know it's going to be an emotional time, but it's going to be fun."
Evans committed to UVa when Dave Leitao was the head coach, and decided he would be a Cavalier even though Leitao was eventually replaced by Tony Bennett.
"I remember sitting in his house, just saying, 'you don't know me,'" says Bennett of their first meeting in 2009. "But I know he was in love with the school, the opportunity, being in state, and then just kind of saying, 'look, we're kind of on a journey and I hope we can do this together and build this thing, and get some consistent success.'"
Four years later the Hampton, Va. native is a senior leader for the Cavaliers who has played in 115 games and started 87 of them.
"UVa is is the greatest school in the country. You know, I played for one of the greatest coaches of all time. And I played in a city where the fans support you and they love you, and my experience here was amazing."
