Ex-Cav McLean Wins Heat at US Olympic Trials

Former Virginia swimmer Matt McLean will need to beat some of the sport's biggest names on Wednesday to make the U.S. Olympic team.

McLean won his semifinal heat in the 200-meter freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials on Tuesday with a time of 1:47.40. McLean will be seeded fourth in Wednesday's 200-freestyle championship race.

Ryan Lochte (1:46.25), the defending world champion in the 200-freestyle, narrowly beat 2008 Olympic champion Michael Phelps (1:46.27) in Tuesday's second semifinal race. They're the top two seeds in Wednesday's championship, followed by Conor Dwyer (1:47.38).

The top six finishers in Wednesday's race make the U.S. Olympic team.

Another former Cavalier, Scot Robison, finished 11th in Tuesday's 200-freestyle semifinals with a time of 1:48.40. The top eight swimmers advanced to Wednesday's championship.
