Ex-Hoo McLean Wins Gold at Olympics
Former Virginia swimmer Matt McLean will need to make room for an Olympic gold medal in his trophy case when he gets home from London.
McLean is a member of the US 4x200-meter freestyle relay team that won the gold medal on Tuesday. McLean becomes the third Virginia swimmer all-time to win an Olympic gold medal, joining Ed Moses in 2000 (4x100m relay) and Melanie Valerio in 1996 (4x100m relay).
McLean swam the second leg of the prelim relay Tuesday morning in London. The US team of Charlie Houchin, McLean, Davis Tarwater, and Conor Dwyer finished in 7:06.75, the fastest time of the two prelim heats.
“I had an awesome time on the relay this morning with Charlie, Conor and Davis,” McLean said. “It was the greatest feeling walking out in the red, white and blue to a cheering crowd. Thanks to everyone for all their support and encouragement, it means the world to me.”
Ryan Lochte, Dwyer, Ricky Berens, and Michael Phelps swam the finals for Team USA, winning the gold in a time of 6:59.70, more than three seconds faster than second-place France. Phelps set an Olympic record with his 19th medal -- and 15th gold medal -- with the win.
