Gelnovatch Gets 250th Win as 'Hoos Blank Providence

When the UVa men's soccer team blanked Providence 4-0 Tuesday night at Klöckner Stadium, it marked the 250th win of head coach George Gelnovatch's career. The 18th-year head coach owns a 250-103-34 career record and the second-most wins in program history.

Eric Bird scored twice in the first half, as the Cavaliers rolled past previously unbeaten Providence. Freshmen Patrick Foss and Riggs Lennon each added second-half goals, the first goal of their UVa careers for both.

“The individual defending was much better than it was on Friday night,” Gelnovatch said. “That was the challenge first and foremost. We continued to create chances and took them well. We had good combinations in the attacking half, good free kicks and attacking free kicks."

The 'Hoos did not allow a shot on goal during the game, and goalkeeper Jeff Gal was rarely challenged by the Friars. UVa put five shots on goal, with Providence keeper Keasel Broome making one save.

The Cavaliers are now 3-3-1 on the season and have scored 10 goals over the last three matches. Next, UVa will travel to Syracuse for the first-ever match between the Cavaliers and Orange in men’s soccer.
