The No. 5 Virginia baseball team pounded out a season-high 17 hits in a 15-6 thumping of Virginia Tech Friday night. The Cavaliers (38-6, 17-5 ACC) earned their seventh straight victory and scored 15-plus runs for the second straight game.
Eight of the Cavaliers’ starters recorded hits, while six had multi-hit games. Every starter scored at least once. Reed Gragnani went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI. Jared King and Brandon Downes each doubled twice and went 3-for-6.
Freshman starter Brandon Waddell worked 5 2/3 innings to claim the win and improve to 4-1. He allowed six earned runs, eight hits and a walk while striking out five. Whit Mayberry pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings to record his second save of the year.
The teams will resume the series Saturday at 2 p.m.
