'Hoos Escape with OT Win in Season Opener

The Virginia men's lacrosse team may have let an eight-goal lead in the fourth quarter disappear Thursday night. But the Cavaliers didn't let a win get away.

Ryan Tucker's goal with a fraction of a second remaining in regulation tied things at 13-13 between No. 7 UVa and No. 12 Loyola. Then James Pannell scored his fourth goal of the night with 2:16 left in overtime to give the Cavaliers a 14-13 win in the season opener for both teams.

"It's great," Pannell said after the game. "I wish when it was around 12-4, it stayed like that. But I mean, to win this. To come back and win that in overtime after we were up by so many goals and have a comeback like that, that was huge. Big win for us."

UVa ended the third quarter with a 12-4 lead, with Pannell and Mark Cockerton each leading the charge with three goals apiece. But the Greyhounds stormed back with nine unanswered goals in the fourth, capped by Tyler Albrecht's go-ahead score with 13.7 seconds to play.

Uva coach Dom Starsia said afterward that he "can't remember a game quite like this."

"The balls are bouncing their way. Every little thing that you can think of, that's a product of feeling as if you're behind the eight-ball, seemed to be happening to us in the fourth quarter," Starsia said. "It certainly is a great win for us at the end of the day, and a good way for us to start the season."

In addition to his four goals, Pannell also assisted on Tucker's game-tying goal. Tucker, Rob Emery, and Tyler German each scored twice for UVa, and Greg Coholan rounded out the scoring.

Albrecht was one of five Loyola players to finish with two goals apiece.
