'Hoos Open Season With Win Over BYU

More than five hours after the game kicked off, the Virginia football sealed a 19-16 win in their season opener against BYU.

The Cavaliers capitalized on a blocked punt by Anthony Harris to take their first lead of the game in the third quarter. After Harris blocked the punt, David Watford completed an 11-yard touchdown pass to Darius Jennings, putting the Cavaliers in front 10-7.

After a safety made it 12-7, BYU retook the lead in the fourth quarter. The Cougars drove down the field starting from their own 8-yard line, capping the drive with a 1-yard rushing touchdown by quarterback Taysom Hill. BYU added a field goal with five minutes left to play, increasing their lead to 16-12.

Late in the fourth quarter, UVa's Harris intercepted a pass by Hill, setting the Cavaliers up on the BYU 13. On the next play, Kevin Parks rushed for a 13-yard touchdown, putting UVa on top for good, 19-16.

Sophomore quarterback David Watford finished his first start at Virginia 18-of-32, throwing for one touchdown and one interception.

The game was delayed more than two hours between the first and second quarters because of severe weather in the area.
