'Hoos Picked Eighth in ACC Women's Hoops

The Virginia women's basketball program is expected to be a middle-of-the-pack team in the ACC in Joanne Boyle's third season as head coach.

The league released both of its preseason women's basketball polls on Wednesday morning, with the Cavaliers picked to finish eighth by both the voting media and the ACC's coaches. UVa senior guard Ataira Franklin was voted to the preseason All-ACC team by both the media and coaches.

The Cavaliers have the top three scorers back from last year's team that finished 16-14 overall, and sixth in the ACC at 8-10. Franklin's 14.3 points-per-game average was ninth in the league last season, while her 2.2 steals were fifth in the league.

Duke was voted the conference's preseason favorite in both polls. The Blue Devils return all five starters from last year's 33-3 team that reached an NCAA regional final.

ACC newcomer Notre Dame finished second in both polls, followed by Maryland and North Carolina. The Terrapins' Alyssa Thomas, the two-time ACC player of the year, was voted the favorite to win that award again this season.
