'Hoos Sweep Doubleheader Over NC State

The UVa baseball team swept their doubleheader against NC State Saturday, winning the opener 8-2 before clinching the series with a 4-3 win in the second game.

The 'Hoos will look for the series sweep Sunday at 11 a.m. The game was originally scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, but has been moved to 11 a.m. Sunday because of a forecast for inclement weather. It was also originally slated to be televised by ESPNU, but will no longer be broadcast.

In the 18 innings of today’s doubleheader, the five Cavalier pitchers combined to strikeout 16 batters while walking none.

The first game was close early, until Virginia broke it open in the eighth, when the Cavaliers scored five runs on six hits to extend the lead to six, 8-2.

Austin Young earned the win and moved to 1-0 after tossing 3 1/3 shutout innings out of the bullpen and retiring all ten batters he faced. Brandon Waddell started and went 5 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs and six hits with six strikeouts.

In game two, starter Scott Silverstein got the win, improving to 4-0 after allowing just one run in the first five innings.

Virginia took a 3-0 lead in game two with an RBI double from Mike Papi followed by an RBI single from Irving in the fourth inning.

After NC State made it 3-1 in the fifth, Brandon Downes homered, his fourth of the year, after hitting a solo shot just over the right field wall to make it 4-1 heading into the sixth.

The Wolfpack scored twice in the sixth to cut the lead to one, but the Cavaliers bullpen held them off the rest of the way.

With the wins, Virginia improved to 21-2 overall and 6-2 in conference, while NC State falls to 16-8 and 3-5 in the ACC.
