Hultzen Speaks at Carson's Cavalier Camp

The Carson Raymond Foundation held its Carson's Cavalier Camp Wednesday at Davenport Field, a chance for young ballplayers in the area to practice their skills with the Virginia baseball team.

The kids were also treated to a special appearance by former UVa great and Seattle Mariners' prospect Danny Hultzen.

Hultzen, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2011 MLB Draft, spoke to the youngsters about the joy of playing baseball and the importance of education.

"Doing things like this really takes you back to when you were a young kid and all the good things you could do just playing baseball and not having a care in the world. So it's awesome to be a part of this."

"I remember when I was a kid the most important thing was just having an opportunity to play and I was very fortunate to have those opportunities and Foundations like this provide kids with an opportunity to play baseball and you couldn't ask for anything else."

Hultzen is in town to do some offseason training and like many former Cavaliers, the lefty enjoys coming back to Charlottesville.

"It's awesome. It's crazy how many guys play here and then want to come back because this is such a great community."

Hultzen is coming off his first season as a professional, accumulating a 9-7 record with a 3.05 ERA and 136 strikeouts in 124 innings pitched between "A" Jackson and "AA" Tacoma, started the "A" All-Star Game and was named to the 2012 MLB All-Star Futures Game.

"It was a lot of fun. It had some ups and downs but I can't complain because I get to play baseball for a living. It doesn't get much better than that."

With one professional season under his belt, Hultzen has his sights set on improving this offseason.

"Just getting stronger," he said. "I've had this experience of playing one full year of professional baseball and I'm going to use the things I've learned from that to hopefully be better this next year."
