Danny Hultzen's AAA debut didn't exactly go the way the former Virginia lefty would have liked.
Hultzen's debut for the Tacoma Rainiers, the AAA affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, was cut short after the prized prospect gave up five earned runs with five walks in just three innings of work against Colorado Springs. He did strike out three but needed 81 pitches to get through the third.
The Sky Sox touched him up for three runs in the first and one each in the second and third.
The Mariners promoted Hultzen from AA Jackson on Wednesday. The night before, he started the Southern League All-Star game, pitching one scoreless inning.
Hultzen was 8-3 with a 1.19 ERA prior to Saturday's start. He was the second overall pick by Seattle in the 2011 draft.
