Baseball America Ranks Fisher Among Draft's Top Prospects

Derek Fisher has already heard his name called once during the annual Major League Baseball player draft. Now the Virginia outfielder is listed among the top prospects for next year's draft.

Baseball America released its preliminary list of the top 50 prospects for the 2014 MLB Draft on Tuesday, with Fisher at No. 16 in the rankings.

"Powerful lefthanded swing makes him a potential first-rounder, though his defense and all-around tools are more in question," the article said of Fisher, who will play his third season with the Cavaliers next spring.

Fisher has hit .290 in 111 games in his first two seasons at UVa, with 14 homers and 98 RBI. He's coming off a strong summer in the Cape Cod League, where he was named an all-league outfielder after finishing fifth on the Cape with a .333 batting average.

Fisher was taken by the Texas Rangers in Round 6 of the 2011 MLB Draft coming out of Cedar Crest High School in Pennsylvania, but chose to enroll at UVa. Baseball America ranked Fisher as the ninth-best high school prospect in the country in that 2011 draft class.
