Dom Starsia is quick to point out his team isn't deserved anything after the Cavaliers have lost three games, all by one goal each.
But sooner or later, karma has to come back around Virginia's side.
It started with a 9-8 loss in overtime to Syracuse, followed by a 12-11 loss to Cornell with just 13 seconds remaining on the clock. A week later, the Wahoos fell to Ohio State, 11-10, in the final minute of play.
Now No. 13 Virginia prepares to face old rival No. 10 Johns Hopkins in the Konica-Minolta Face-Off Classic at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
"Well I got asked before 'Are you going to do something that's going to help you get the win' and the answer is we can't do anything more really. We're doing everything we can," Starsia explained Thursday at practice. "It's easy to say for us to win one guys have to make plays but then those guys have to go out and actually do it."
Junior Nick O'Reilly has been a scoring regular for the Cavaliers, including four goals against Cornell. He has an idea of how Virginia can finally overcome its late-game issues.
"It hasn't been one exact thing I think it's just fix up the mistakes a little bit and just be a little bit more sharp and I think we'll start coming away on the winning side of it."
According to fellow junior Scott McWilliams, the Hoos aren't far off from being undefeated.
"From each game we've seen parts of greatness from our team and we know we can play at that type of level," the defenseman said. "We're just working to put together a complete game."
