Former Virginia swimmer Matt McLean is expected to be a member of the U.S. Olympic team after his fifth-place finish in the 200-meter freestyle Wednesday night at the Olympic Trials Omaha.
McLean, who entered the race seeded fourth, touched the wall in 1:46.78. The top four finishers make the Olympic team, while McLean's fifth-place finish should give him a spot as an alternate. The official announcement will be made next Monday.
Rising Virginia senior Lauren Perdue advanced to Thursday's final of the women's 200-meter freestyle after finishing seventh in Wednesday's semifinals. Perdue, who missed the NCAA Championships in March because of back surgery, finished in 1:58.28 on Wednesday.
Rising sophomore Sarah White's bid for a spot in the 200-meter individual medley finals came up short on Wednesday. White finished 15th in the event's semifinals, with the top eight advancing.
