Miller Promises "Aggressive", New-Look Cavaliers

Blake Miller makes no bones about the way his Virginia softball team will play.

"We're going to swing the bats and we're going to play good, fast-pitch softball," he explained. "We're going to be aggressive as anything."

Miller is the new head man at UVa after Eileen Schmidt resigned this offseason.

He spent the last three seasons as an assistant at Oregon, where he helped lead the Ducks to three Super Regionals and a Women's College World Series appearance.

He now inherits a Cavalier team that hasn't made it to the NCAA's since 2010.

"I think there's a lot of talent on this team, it's just developing the mindset that failure is a strong point of how we learn. So we have to learn to build on that failure and not tear down ourselves."

This is Miller's first head job at the D1 level, but he had previously been a head coach at Division II Texas A&M-Kingsville and Darton Junior College.

He insists becoming a head man at the D1 level doesn't change his approach.

"My goal is to win. Every level I've been lucky enough that my girls have worked hard and we were able to be successful," he said.

Miller's biggest challenge may be turning around an offense that finished dead last in the ACC in multiple offensive categories.

Conversely, his teams at Oregon routinely finished in the top-3 of most batting departments in the Pac-12.

"If we swing the bat and we're aggressive, that's where everything starts. We may give up 5 to 6 runs but if we're scoring 7 to 10, that's the big part."

"We have no need to sit and let the other team decide what happens. My team will decide the game, we will define what happens in the game. And once our players realize how simple this game is and how they can define it, that's when we'll be successful."
