New Talent Creates More Competition for Cavaliers

With a new crop of talent hoping to get on the field for the Virginia football team this fall comes a new level of competition for spots on the Cavaliers' depth chart.

Five-star recruits Quin Blanding, a highly touted safety, and defensive tackle Andrew Brown are expected to compete for starting spots on the 'Hoos defense in the fall. Four-star wide receiver Jamil Kamara is also hoping to make an early impact.

Even though the younger players may take reps away from the UVa veterans, senior safety Anthony Harris says the new level of competition is good for both sides.

"I feel like the older guys have done a great job of embracing everybody, talking to them when they're on the sidelines, helping them get better not only when they're in during a rep but when they're watching the other team," he said after Tuesday's practice. "I think there's a good balance between the two, guys going out there competing for spots and guys pushing and pulling guys along in the same way."

"We just push each other every day," junior wide receiver Canaan Severin said of the competition at receiver. "I push Dre, Andre Levrone, I push Keeon Johnson, Kyle Dockins pushes me, Miles Gooch was pushing all of us. The way we worked was the hardest I think when I've been here, this offseason."

One position where the competition seems mostly settled is at quarterback. Sophomore Greyson Lambert was listed in the top spot on the Cavaliers' post-spring depth chart and has been taking reps with the first team in the first few days of fall camp. This week, Lambert has received praise from both his head coach and his wide receivers.

"He's controlling the offense," said Severin. "He's being a good leader on the field and off the field. He's doing an excellent job. I know the receivers love working with him. We love having him as our captain, as our leader. He's just got to keep on doing what he's doing, keep working hard every day and find a way to get better."
