No. 1 Virginia Perfect Again in ACC Regular Season

The No. 1 Virginia men’s tennis team completed its seventh consecutive undefeated ACC regular season on Sunday with a 6-1 victory over Miami. The Cavaliers (21-0, 10-0 ACC) won their 77th consecutive ACC regular season match and their 103rd straight against conference opposition (regular season and postseason).

“I am proud of the way we closed out the regular season,” said head coach Brian Boland. “The conditions in Miami today were brutal, so it was a good challenge for us to deal with. With the wind, it was absolutely the most difficult conditions we have played in all season.”

Virginia took a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point for the 16th consecutive match.

The Cavaliers opened singles play by winning five of the six first sets and won three matches in straight sets to close out the victory. Harrison Richmond finished first at No. 6 to extend the lead to 2-0. Alex Domijan followed with a 7-6, 6-1 victory at the No. 1 position to make the score 3-0. Mac Styslinger clinched the win at No. 4, 6-3, 7-5 for the fourth Cavalier point.

Julen Uriguen extended the lead to 5-0 as he posted a 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 win at No. 5 and Jarmere Jenkins added a 7-5, 7-6 victory at No. 2.

Virginia will be the No. 1 seed in next week’s ACC Tournament at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. After a first round bye, the Cavaliers will open play with a quarterfinal match on Friday.
