No. 1 Virginia Rolls on Senior Day

The top-ranked Virginia men’s tennis team closed out its home regular season schedule Saturday with a 6-1 victory over Georgia Tech on Senior Day at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers improved to 19-0 and ran their ACC win streak to 101 consecutive matches.

“Under the circumstances, I thought the team played well today,” said head coach Brian Boland. “It has been an emotional weekend. I give both Clemson and Georgia Tech a lot of credit for coming ready to play and they didn’t make it easy for us.”

Virginia took a 1-0 lead by sweeping the doubles matches for the seventh straight match.

The Cavalier lead doubled to 2-0 just minutes into singles play. Georgia Tech retired with an injury after just one game at No. 4 against Ryan Shane, giving the UVa freshman the victory. Fellow first-year Mac Styslinger made the score 3-0 with his 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles.

Mitchell Frank followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 to clinch the victory.

The final two matches on the court featured the two Cavalier seniors playing their final regular season home match. Julen Uriguen posted a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 6 and Jarmere Jenkins won at No. 2 to close out the 6-1 win. Uriguen and Jenkins, along with Dino Dell’Orto and Brian Fang, were honored in between doubles and singles for Senior Day.

“I think it was tough for Jarmere and Julen today,” said Boland. “You put so much work and energy into this program for four years and sometimes all of that hits you at the worst time, when you are out there competing on Senior Day. They handled it well and I think that is all part of the learning process.”

Virginia will conclude the regular season next weekend with a trip to Florida. The Cavaliers visit Florida State on Friday and Miami on Sunday.
