The top-ranked Virginia men’s tennis team took down No. 5 Oklahoma 6-1 Sunday at the Boar's Head Sports Club. The win marks the third top-five win of the season for the Cavaliers, who are now 7-0 on the season.
Virginia opened the match by winning a tight doubles point. Justin Shane and Julen Uriguen gave the Cavaliers the edge with an 8-4 win at No. 3 over Lawrence Formentera and Peerakit Siributwong. At No. 2, Alex Domijan and Mitchell Frank were down two breaks, 4-1, but rallied for an 8-6 win over Guillermo Alcorta and Axel Alvarez Llamas to clinch the opening point.
In singles, the Cavaliers got three quick wins at the bottom of the lineup to clinch the victory. Ryan Shane was first off the courts, downing Alvarez Llamas 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 4 position. A minute later Mac Styslinger sealed a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5 over Formentera. Uriguen followed with his 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6 over Siributwong to seal the win for Virginia.
The matches at the top two positions split sets and went to a third set match tiebreaker. At No. 2, Domijan raced out to a 9-0 lead in the breaker before closing out a 6-4, 4-6, 10-3 win over Alcorta. Jenkins rallied from losing the first set against Costin Paval to force a third set. He also opened the third-set breaker strong, winning the first six points, en route to a 2-6, 6-4, 10-2 victory.
Virginia begins a four-match spring break road trip on March 11 at Baylor. The Cavaliers won’t return home until March 22 when they open ACC play by hosting No. 4 Duke.
