Treveon Graham sank a deep 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds to play, and the No. 14 VCU Rams came away with a 59-56 win over No. 25 Virginia at John Paul Jones Arena Tuesday night.
The Rams took a 56-55 lead when Graham hit a baseline jumper with 1:18 left in the game. UVa's Malcolm Brogdon hit the second of two free throws to tie it at 56 before Graham hit the game-winning shot.
"It was an intense game, an intense setting," coach Tony Bennett said after the loss. "Good for certainly both teams, and I'll say this out of respect for Shaka. It stings to lose, but when you lose to someone that you respect, and that they're a friend of yours, it's a little easier. Because they do things the right way. Our program does things the right way."
Joe Harris led Virginia with 18 points. Brogdon added 10 points and 5 rebounds for the Cavaliers, who shot just 1-for-8 from 3-point range as a team and 19-of-33 from the free throw line.
VCU improves to 2-0 on the season, while UVa falls to 1-1 with the loss. Next up, the Cavaliers remain home Saturday to host Davidson at 12 p.m.
