Owen's Career Night Propels UVa Past James Madison

March 21, 2012

Senior attacker Josie Owen set a career high with six goals, freshman attacker Sloan Warren added five goals and the 12th-ranked Virginia women’s lacrosse team defeated James Madison 13-9 Wednesday at Klöckner Stadium.

The win improved Virginia’s record to 5-4 overall and 4-1 at home this season. The Cavalier win snapped a two-game JMU win streak in the series.

Owen totaled seven points as she tallied an assist to go with her six goals. Her previous career high was a five-goal effort against George Mason last season.

Warren, meanwhile, scored five goals on six shots. Rounding out the Virginia scoring was Morgan Stephens and Jess Loizeaux with one goal apiece and Kelsey Gahan and Julie Gardner with one assist each.

Virginia scored the first goal of the game 18 seconds into the game, as Owen was fouled headingtowards the goal and converted the ensuing free position attempt at the 29:42 mark. Warren followed up with a free position goal of her own less than a minute later to put Virginia up, 2-0.

James Madison scored six first-half goals but the Cavaliers were able to maintain that two-goal cushion and led 8-6 at halftime.

In the second half, Virginia out-scored the Dukes 5-3 and Owen and Warren each had two second-half goals. In the second half, James Madison did not get closer than the two goal deficit and UVa prevailed 13-9.

In goal for Virginia, Kim Kolarik allowed single-digit goals for the third-straight game. She finished with four saves, all in the second half.

Up next for Virginia is a road game on Saturday at ACC rival Duke.
