Papi, Downes Earn Preseason All-America Honors

The Virginia baseball season doesn't start for another two months but a pair of Cavaliers have already earned preseason accolades.

Junior outfielders Mike Papi and Brandon Downes were named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Preseason team Wednesday.

Papi was selected to the first team while Downes was placed on the second team.

Papi hit an ACC-best .381 in 2013 while earning First-Team All-ACC honors. He hit seven home runs and drove in 57 runs while spearheading a Virginia offense which hit an ACC-leading .312 for the year. He was named the ACC Player of the Week each of the last two weeks of the regular season.

Meanwhile Downes hit .315 in 61 games last season and led the team in home runs (10) and RBIs (59).

Virginia opens the 2014 season February 14th at Kentucky.
