Papi's Walkoff Gives Cavs Win in CWS Opener

With two outs and the game tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth, Mike Papi doubled to right-center to bring Thomas Woodruff home and give UVa a 2-1 walkoff win over Ole Miss. The Cavaliers are now 1-0 in the 2014 College World Series and will face TCU on Tuesday at 8 p.m. at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha.

In the Cavaliers' win, UVa starter Nathan Kirby and reliever Artie Lewicki combined for the first one-hitter at the College World Series since 1983. Lewicki earned the win in relief, giving up no hits and no runs in two innings. Kirby worked seven innings, and gave up one hit and one run while striking out four. Ole Miss converted two walks and a groundout to tie it in the eighth.

The 'Hoos opened up a 1-0 lead in their half of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Joe McCarthy that scored Nate Irving. The score remained 1-0 until the eighth, when Ole Miss scored a run on an RBI groundout by Holt Perdzock.

With the game tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth, Irving walked and Woodruff came in to pinch run. With two outs and a full count, Papi sent a ball deep to right-center, bringing Woodruff home and sealing the win.
