It's not a category Mike London wants his Virginia football team to be leading the ACC in.
No team in the league has been called for more penalties than the Cavaliers through the season's first five games. Virginia has been penalized 39 times for 346 yards, including 16 flags for 145 yards in last Saturday's 44-38 loss at home to Louisiana Tech.
"Silly penalties. Things that are basically out-of-character of the way we have played, or can play," London said of Saturday's game.
One of Saturday's calls was an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against sophomore running back Kevin Parks. The penalty stalled a Virginia drive, forcing the Cavaliers to settle for a field goal.
"I hold myself accountable, because I was one of those persons to get a flag late," Parks said. "We've just got to be a little bit smarter. More disciplined."
"That's on us; that's on coaching," said London. "And we've got to do a better job of making sure the players understand that no player is worth the penalties that they give us, or cause us to have, and we've got to do a better job coaching."
The Cavaliers are tied with Idaho and UTEP for 96th in the country, averaging 7.8 penalties per game.
"The ones that are personal control penalties and fouls, those are the things that a young man is not going to be playing if they continue, or they show a pattern of behavior like that," London said.
