Another former Virginia baseball player is headed to the Seattle Mariners organization.
According to his hometown newspaper, second baseman Keith Werman is joining the Mariners as an undrafted free agent. The Sun Gazette report says Werman planned to sign with the team on Wednesday.
Werman, a fan favorite at Davenport Field throughout his Virginia career, was a second-team All-ACC selection as a senior. He hit .274 in 58 games, scoring 37 runs and driving in 24. His 28 sacrifice bunts lead Division I baseball.
Werman hit .309 for his Virginia baseball career.
Werman will join several members of the Cavaliers' 2011 College World Series team in the Mariners' organization. Shortstop Chris Taylor was taken by Seattle in the fifth round of last week's draft. The Mariners also picked three Cavaliers in the 2011 draft -- pitcher Danny Hultzen (with the second overall pick), catcher John Hicks, and third baseman Steven Proscia.
